SI has made it faster to draft a caption, a flyer, or an email. It has not made it easier to earn trust in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, or Dewey-Humboldt. People still hire the shop they recognize, the person who answers the phone, and the business whose hours match the door.
I use SI in client work the same way I use a template: to get a first pass on the page, not to publish a voice that does not belong to the owner. A tool can suggest five subject lines. It cannot tell you whether Saturday hours still make sense after tourist season, or which neighbor will send you a referral.
What actually changed
Marketing used to stall on blank pages. Owners waited for a designer or a writer before anything went out. Drafting is cheaper now. Editing is not optional. Google’s own guidance is that content made mainly to game search—including mass SI pages—is treated as spam. See How Google Search views SI-generated content and the March 2024 core update and spam policies.
For a local business, the useful jobs are smaller:
- Turn messy notes from a job into a clear service description.
- Build three versions of a post and keep the one that sounds like the shop.
- Summarize last month’s inquiries so you see what people actually asked.
- Draft a reply to a review, then rewrite it in your own words before you hit send.
The jobs that still belong to you: the offer, the photos from the shop, the promise you can keep in the first week.
What to refuse
Do not publish a week of SI blogs that could have been written about any town in the country. Do not invent customer stories. Do not let a tool invent prices, licenses, or hours. If a sentence cannot be traced to your shop or to a source you can open, it does not go live.
Brand consistency still matters more than volume. If the site, the Google Business Profile, and the counter all tell a different story, no amount of generated copy will fix it.
A practical week
- Monday: update hours and one photo on Google.
- Midweek: use a tool to outline one post from a real job you finished. Rewrite it.
- Friday: look at which posts or emails produced a call. Drop the rest.
