Build Before You Grow: Creating a Business Ready for Sustainable Growth

Growth feels like the prize—more customers, more revenue, more room to build. It can also shine a light on every weak spot hiding inside a business.

That is why Breeanya Hinkel, Director of Community Relations for Northern Arizona at the Better Business Bureau, is highlighting operational excellence ahead of the Prescott BBB Growth Surge Bootcamp. At the bootcamp, Marie Platowski-Beals of the Yavapai College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will lead the session “Operational Excellence: Building a Business Ready for Sustainable Growth.”

Why operations matter before you scale

Operational excellence is about creating a business that can handle growth without creating chaos. As a company expands, owners often juggle more customers, employees, vendors, deadlines, and financial obligations. Processes that worked when the company was small may no longer be enough.

  • Standardize the work you repeat every week so quality does not depend on memory alone.
  • Spot steps you can eliminate, automate, or hand off before volume rises.
  • Find where the process slows down—and whether everything still depends on you.

Building systems around everyday operations helps owners see what needs structure now, not after the next surge of demand. The goal is not simply to become bigger. It is to create a stronger business prepared for what comes next.

Try this now: the Repeat-It Test

Choose one task you perform repeatedly every week—onboarding a customer, processing an order, responding to an inquiry, or preparing an invoice. Write down every step you currently take to complete it. Then ask yourself:

  • Could someone else follow these instructions without asking you questions?
  • Is there a step that could be eliminated or automated?
  • Where does this process most often slow down, and does the entire process depend on you?

If the process only works because you personally know what happens next, you have identified an opportunity to build a better system. That is one process. Imagine what could happen when you apply that thinking throughout your business.
