Reminisces of a Horse Crazy Gal

Author Melody Huttinger

How do you define “Horse Crazy Gal”? It’s simply a girl or woman who prefers the company of equines to that of humans. Not that she is antisocial, but feels “at home” with horses like maybe she really is part horse, and should have been born a filly.

Other characteristics? While she gives a good-looking male bicyclist in spandex a second glance, she nearly drives off the road to get a better look at the horses in the pasture, be they minis, quarter horses or Clydesdales. She appreciates the stud-muffin in the gym, flexing his pecs, but when she describes strong, smooth muscles and an athletic body, she is talking about the Andalusian stallion she saw performing “airs above the ground” at a recent performance. She loves a hug from her husband when feeling down, but simply walking into the barn to the smell and feel of her horse instantly makes the blues go away. She knows there’s nothing that can quite compare with a gallop on her favorite horse, along the trail or in the arena.

A Horse Crazy Gal may have a great shopping experience, but not at the mall or in Nordstroms. The great experience includes finding the perfect body brush or a favorite fly spray on sale at Tractor Supply. Proper clothes are important, though. Even though she passes right by the party dresses, she can get stuck for an hour on a rack full of riding pants.

Makeup and the perfect hairdo usually aren’t a priority for a Horse Crazy Gal. Why fuss with a fancy “do” when a ponytail works perfectly for going to the barn? For the big night out on the town, her husband or significant other is lucky when the dirty clothes and muck shoes are switched for clean jeans and cowboy boots. Slapping on a little tinted lip balm and brushing out her ponytail is getting quite fancy.

Even though she will turn up her nose at a trendy sports car, the Horse Crazy Gal doesn’t get off cheap. She salivates and chomps at the bit when viewing a heavy-duty pickup truck that will easily pull a high-end, top-of-the-line horse trailer. Instead of staying in the Hilton, she prefers a live aboard horse trailer, so she can have her best hairy friends along on the trip.

A Horse Crazy Gal isn’t fussy about keeping her house spotless, but watch her run for the shovel at the sight of a steaming poop pile close to her baby’s hooves. She can take or leave a gourmet meal, but no expense is spared for her horse friends. They get the highest quality hay, grain and supplements.

A Horse Crazy Gal will get back on and ride after a spill, even with a broken clavicle (just ask my husband!) She has to be dragged to the clinic for treatment, but not before making sure her ride is bedded down. On the other hand, if her horse gets the slightest pimple on his nose overnight, the vet is immediately called for an emergency visit.

All in all, Horse Crazy Gals, are a different breed than Boy Crazy Gals. I’m pretty sure that growing up my parents preferred it that way. Especially my father. More about him next
