The process of hiring a ghostwriter should not seem like a daunting task. However, it is important to know what your project will entail. Once you have created a plan than finding someone to write the book will be much easier. Beware, the experience can somewhat of an intimate involvement. Therefore, hiring a writer with skills to complete the book, plus establish a compatible connection, is also highly important.
In most cases, every writer will vary with a set of processes that work for them. At that point, the project specifics depend on the book genre, topic, and result. Any non-fiction books the author should provide the writer with any necessary information to complete writing the book, along with guidelines on the research for the project. It is best to create a detailed outline and index of chapter titles broken down into individual sections and topics.
As the project progresses with any non-fiction book, there will always be research necessary, but it would be wise to discuss who will do the investigation. Preference is always to do my own research; it allows me to understand the book topic better and be more through.
A fiction book, on the other hand, is a whole other ball of wax, so to speak. Except in the cases of a blended fiction. While the outline may not have to be as detailed it is still necessary to get a well-defined index of the storyline, characters, ending, plot, etc.
- Is the book non-fiction or fiction?
- What are your plans after the book is completed?
- Do you have an idea on the book topic, genre, etc.?
- What is your timeframe?
- Do you plan to help write the book, or will the ghostwriter write the whole book?
- Do you have an idea of how long the book might be?
The next step in working with a ghostwriter is finding out what kind of help they will offer the author. Sometimes, even though a book topic sounds good up front, it may need some tweaking to improve the finished project. Therefore, making it very important to hire someone you can trust to be honest and upfront because you are counting on them with confidential material. They should offer advice but also do as the author requests.
I write for you
If the writer has written and published multiple books, it is important to consider their feedback or suggestions on creating a successful project. At this point, the discussion of how the book will be published is highly necessary. It will determine how the book project is started and completed. More on that topic soon.
Once the author has chosen the ghostwriter the subject of creative licensing is important. Whether the book is fiction or non-fiction does not matter, because either way, the writing will vary dramatically. It is important to establish clear boundaries of what you want and expect from the writer.
It is wise to give some thought of communication between the parties involved. One of the greatest parts of being a ghostwriter is the freedom to work anywhere in the world. Therefore, virtual meetings are a regular part of the writing process. Although, sometimes, the writer may live close and you can meet with them in person. The arrangements should be discussed before starting signing the ghostwriter contract.
Note: Many writers accept monthly payments for extensive projects. However, remember a lot of ghostwriter’s work on a ‘half up-front, half on delivery’ basis.
Don’t be afraid to explore what a particular writer might do to make it possible for you to work with them. Writers want to earn what they’re worth, but the total value isn’t always about the money, alone.
In general, for a nonfiction project, a ghostwriter will rely on the author to provide all the stories, case studies, research and other materials that will be used in the project. The ghostwriter may also interview with the author and other experts to gather information and stories, and sometimes he or she also conducts research.
